Common questions about accelerators
- What is a startup accelerator?
- A startup accelerator is a fixed-term program that gives early-stage companies mentorship, introductions to investors, and usually seed funding in exchange for equity. Most run 3-6 months and end with a demo day where the startups pitch.
- How much equity do accelerators take?
- Most accelerators take 5-10% equity. Y Combinator takes 7% for $125K, plus $375K on an uncapped MFN note. Techstars takes 5% for $20K, plus $200K MFN. A few take no equity at all.
- How do I choose the right accelerator for my startup?
- Talk to founders who have been through it. Most people skip that step. Ask how involved the partners are, whether they opened doors to customers or investors, and whether anyone still answered after the batch ended. A program that fits what you are building beats a few points of equity, so terms are the last filter. Every profile here names who is behind the program, and for most programs the companies they backed. Start there.
